The department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at Lok Nayak Hospital was started in 1965 and a fully functional burns unit came into being in 1970. The department is situated in a separate wing of the hospital and has three independent floors with 100 beds for Burns and Plastic Surgery patients. The admissions average more than 150 patients per month The 60-bedded Burns Unit of this hospital is a tertiary care center and is the one of the largest in the country. The Burns Unit has 12-bedded Intensive Care Unit. Rest of the 48 beds are for the intermediate level care and chronic cases including a 3-bedded post-operative ward. All the patients are nursed in separate cubicles. The Unit is equipped with an Operation Theatre exclusively for Burn and Trauma Patients. There are two dressing rooms, one each for male and female patients. The centre has its own sterilizing unit. The whole ward along with the O.T and the dressing rooms are equipped with UV lights for sterilization. The department has its own physiotherapy and occupational therapy services.
The Plastic Surgery wing is very well equipped with state of the art equipments and is providing full range of plastic, reconstructive, hand, cosmetic , microvascular and maxillofacial surgical care in routine & emergency. The department is one of the pioneers in Head and Neck Reconstruction and Microsurgery in the country, which was started by Dr. Rajeev B. Ahuja way back in 1988. Dr. P. S. Bhandari is a renowned figure in Ear Reconstruction, which is now recognized world over. Dr. Arun Goel is a prime asset to the department & is well known for his unsurpassable dedication towards burn and other trauma patients. Dr.Prabhat Shrivastava joined the Department as Specialist in the year 2002. The department has risen to a world-class unit and the key to this has been an able administration, immense professional dedication, excellent academic environment and a true team approach.
