Women who want to get screening done for genital cancers can visit the Gynae OPD. Pap smear is done everyday from Monday to Saturday as part of the OPD. VIA and colposcopy are also available.
This is the specialty of diseases of the female reproductive system. (Greek. Gynaiko – ‘woman’)
After an OPD consultation and ascertation that a surgery is required, the patient is worked up for anesthesia fitness on the OPD basis and then admitted two days prior to surgery.
24 hour emergency services are available for emergency surgeries.
The common problems when a woman needs to see a gynaecologist are:
- Vaginal discharge
- Menstrual complaints, eg delayed menses, no menses, too frequent or too heavy menses, bleeding after menopause
- Inability to bear children
- Appreciation of the womb being seen during straining
- Cancer of the reproductive tract
- Itching around the genitals
- Urinary problems
- Advice oncontraception
Laparo in Greek means “flank” which is the side of the body between the ribs and the hips. The term ‘scope’ means to ‘look at’ or examine. Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure performed through very small incisions in the abdomen using specialized instruments.
Obstetrics (L. “to stand by”) is a medical-surgical specialty dealing with the care of woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. In practice, the obstetrician will see a pregnant woman on a regular basis as her pregnancy advances. The exact schedule varies according to resources and risk factors.
Both the gynaecology and antenatal OPDs are held everyday in the department from Monday to Saturday from 9 am. Registration for these OPDs is done from 9 am to 12.30 pm.
Special OPDs are held in the afternoon from 2 pm to 4 pm from Monday to Friday.
Childbirth by surgical removal of the baby through an incision made in the abdominal and uterine wall, usually used as an alternative when natural delivery is considered risky.
Apart from gynaecology and antenatal OPDs, family planning OPD and special clinics for infertility, hormone replacement therapy, endocrinology and oncology are held in the afternoon on specific days.
Emergency services are available round the clock and the department has well equipped labour ward, operation theaters and a IVF center.
Cesarean section is recommended when vaginal delivery might pose a risk to the mother or baby. Common conditions which require this are:
- Prolonged labour
- Fetal distress
- Multiple Pregnancy as n twins (in some cases), triplets or more
- Abnormal presentation
- Failed induction of labour
- Failed instrumental delivery
- Low lying placenta or placenta praevia
- Inadequate pelvis
Family planning OPD is held daily in the department from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. Facilities for counselling, IUD insertion, MTP including medical method of termination of pregnancy as well as emergency contraception are available.
Laparoscopic sterilizations with or without MTP are done everyday in an operation theatre especially designated for the purpose and the patients are discharged the same day.
The average duration of hospital stay after an uncomplicated vaginal delivery is 24 to 72 hours. Following a cesarean delivery, the patient is discharged on the 4th postoperative day with advice to follow up subsequently for stitch removal.
